Matthew Bourne’s sumptuous The Red Shoes returns to Sadler’s Wells for the Christmas season. This gorgeous adaptation of the iconic film charts one girl’s dream to be the world’s greatest dancer. See it from 3 December 2019.

The production sold out before its world premiere had even opened back in 2016. It went on to win two Olivier Awards - Best Theatre Choreographer and Best Entertainment - and it played to packed out houses as it toured the UK and USA.

Ballerina Victoria Page has given her heart to dance. When two men enter the scene, she finds herself torn between love and ambition. As they exert their own desires and agendas upon her, she finds that passion, obsession and possessiveness all go hand in hand. The piece is based on Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s 1948 film of the same name, which Bourne has adored since his teenage years.

Based on the film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger
and the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale
Music by Bernard Herrmann

A sell-out for its world premiere in 2016, Matthew Bourne’s triumphant adaptation of the legendary film returns to London, having won two Olivier Awards and dazzled audiences across the UK and the USA.

The Red Shoes is a tale of obsession, possession and one girl's dream to be the greatest dancer in the world. Victoria Page lives to dance but her ambitions become a battleground between the two men who inspire her passion.

Set to the achingly romantic music of golden-age Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann, The Red Shoes is orchestrated by Terry Davies and played live by the New Adventures Orchestra, with cinematic designs by Lez Brotherston, lighting by Paule Constable and sound by Paul Groothuis.

"A feast for the eye. The Red Shoes will be dancing for years to come"

"Enthralling. Richly satisfying"

"Shoes that fit beautifully. Blissful"

"A gorgeous take on a film classic"

"A trip to see The Red Shoes is a must. Another Bourne legacy"
